Larnaka District Medieval Museum
Cyprus
Worth seeing the castle.
Larnaka District Medieval Museum is located inside the fort at the southern end of the Phinikoudes seafront.Built in 1625, it was used as a prison in the first years of British rule. It houses the District Mediaeval Museum. After the Cypriot independance the castle itself was converted into a museum, while the castle courtyard was converted into an open-air theatre, accomodating 200 people.
The fort is also used as the Larnaca Municipal Cultural Centre during the summer.
This small museum contains displays from the early Christian, Byzantine, Lusignan and Ottoman periods, as well as 12th - to 18th century pottery, photos of historical sites and a collection of firearms, helmets and swords dating from the 15th to the 19th century.
