アイオス・ニコラオス・トン・ガトン修道院

教会と修道院

アイオス・ニコラオス・トン・ガトン修道院は、レメソスの塩田とアクロティリの東に位置しています。おそらくキプロスで最も古い修道院であり、伝統によると4世紀にセント・ヘレンによって建てられたと言われています。実際、セント・ヘレンは聖十字架の一部を修道院に残しました。

伝説によれば、グレート・コンスタンティンの母であるセント・ヘレンが修道院を建てた時、アクロティリの半島は有毒なヘビに苦しんでいました。長期の干ばつによってヘビが増殖したのです。そこで、聖ヘレンは聖地エルサレムから帰国し、ヘビを駆除するためにネコを連れてきたと言われています。建設作業も行いました。

修道院の教会は14世紀の建物です。一廊式のアーチ型屋根の教会です。特に中央入口は印象的で、使徒ペトロとパウロの浮き彫りが訪問者を虜にします。
