Description
Aphrodite's Rock is one of the main attractions in Cyprus, both with regards to nature as well as our cultural heritage. It is considered to be the birthplace of Aphrodite, the Greek Goddess of Love and Beauty and as such, it is part of the Unesco World Heritage site of Paphos. The spot is beautiful, decorated by peculiar rock formations (several, besides the Rock itself) different geological strata (including magmatic) and neighbours the imposing chalky White Cliffs, which at places reach heights of between 100 to 150 meters. Our kayaking trip starts at Prolimnos beach, the first beach east of the Rock, accessible by car. It should be noted that as this is a private trip, the exact route (including its length) can be customised and finetuned, based on the sea conditions and the explorers profile and preferences. The west part of the standard '8' route is about 4.5 km long. It passed by a small stretch of a shorter part of the white cliffs, a number of rocky limestone islets inside the sea (which deserve exploration - they have various openings and usually waterbirds on the top), peculiar colours on the coast (dark brown or grey right next to light colours) and reaches as far west as the Rock of Aphrodite. If travellers prefer, it is possible, with care, to land on the west side of the Rock, to explore the vicinity on foot, or even to have a short break going also upto the nearby kiosk. The default kayaking route is about six kilometers long, with an '8' shape. After we return to Prolimnos beach from the west, we usually go east (we can skip it if preferred) towards the main body of the White Cliffs for nearly a kilometer (each way) in order to have a more complete experience of the imposing cliffs. For those who want a longer route, usually we go as far east as Lachanikon beach, bringing the length of the route to over ten km long. This is one of the best kayaking routes on the island.
