Description
A family business that offers experiential/educational tours for small groups of visitors with special interests in the natural environment, rural lifestyle and traditional products of Cyprus.
Begin your experience with a short presentation and video on the life and importance of bees, as well as the threats they face. Enjoy a brief discussion and check out the bees at work in a glass hive in the Educational Hall.
Next, head to the honey extraction and bottling laboratory for a guided tour. Get hands-on with the machines, where possible, and try all batches of honey produced in the last year, as well as other beekeeping or processing products. Sip on iced herbal tea with honey.
Then, take part in a honey pie-making workshop. Roll out fresh dough, create rounded pies, and fry them. Add honey and cinnamon on top and enjoy your delicious creations.
Finally, become a beekeeper for a day. Wear the beekeepers' protection suit that will be provided for adults and children and inspect the hives in their natural habitat. Spot the Bee Queen and the Drones, observe the Bee Workers during their work, browse through Honey and Pollen storerooms, see the eggs inside the cells and learn how important organization is for the welfare of these social insects.
Experiential activities depend on the month of your visit to the hives:
- Honey harvesting in August
- New swamps made in March & April
- Beeswax isolation in September
- Raw honey bottling from September to November
- Creation of new frames for the hives in winter months etc.
Commitment to Sustainability and the Environment:
The project is co-funded by the Operational Programme 'Sustainable Development and Competitiveness' for the period 2007 - 2013 under the Plan for Strengthening Youth Entrepreneurship. This distinction gave the opportunity for the realization of interactive tours and the development of alternative tourism with special interest for nature, rural lifestyle, traditional gastronomy and tourism of outdoor activities.
