Kykkos Monastery

The monastery is the largest and richest religious foundation in Cyprus and is known throughout the Orthodox world. The monastery is found in the region of Marathasa, 12 kms west of Pedhoulas.
Kykkos was built about 900 years ago for its icon, the painting of which is attributed to St Loukas the Evangelist and was given to a Cypriot monk by Emperor Comnemos for relieving his dayghter's sciatica.
The famous icon is called Eleousa. It has been encased in silver for 200 years and that stands in front of the iconostasis. Photography is not permitted. There is also a small one-room museum with items of interest from the monastery's past, mainly religious regalia and books.
The monastery is opens daily during the daytime. There is a strict dress code. Men should no wear shorts and must wear shirts or similar and ladies should cover their shoulders and no wear shorts either.
