Description
This full-day tour in North Cyprus includes hotel pickup and covers key historical and cultural sites suitable for history enthusiasts and cultural travelers.
Begin with a visit to the tomb and monastery of St Barnabas, who preached in Cyprus alongside St Paul. The monastery, now a museum, houses icons and serves as a site of pilgrimage.
A short drive from there leads to the ruins of the Roman city of Salamis. Walk through the ancient streets, explore the gymnasium, baths, and the large theatre preserved from Roman times.
Enjoy a included lunch at a seaside restaurant in summer or an inland restaurant in winter; drinks are not included.
After lunch, explore modern and old Famagusta on a guided walking tour. Examine the Venetian-built city walls, and visit the 14th-century St Nicholas Cathedral, now the Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque.
Spend free time in the old city discovering “upcycled” buildings, such as Salamis pillars reused in a nearby palace. Wander to Othello’s Tower, the Lion Gate, ruined churches, and abandoned cannons, or browse local shops in the shaded streets.
The tour concludes with a view of Varosha, a deserted resort area closed off since 1974, visible only from the border fence.
