Saint’s Unique Easter Procession The highlight of Easter in Larnaka is the town’s unique tradition related to its Patron Saint and first bishop – Agios Lazaros (Saint Lazarus) – with a procession of the revered saint’s icon taking place through the city centre. This year’s procession takes place on Saturday, April 23. A special mass is firstly held in memory of the saint, followed by a two-and-a-half hour procession through the streets of Larnaka, which is an impressive sight to behold. The procession will take place early evening and can be viewed from its start at the St. Lazarus church, or on any of the major streets of the commercial centre, which runs parallel to the palm tree promenade ‘Foinikoudes’. Agios Lazaros came to Cyprus after being resurrected by Jesus. He was ordained as Bishop of Kition by the Apostles Barnabas and Paul and lived in the town for 30 years. The magnificent stone church in his name is one of the most remarkable examples of Byzantine architecture in Cyprus and lies over the tomb of the saint. Built by Byzantine Emperor Leo VI in the 9th century, the church was restored in the 17th century and now sits in its own picturesque square.
